Celebrate Your Writer's Block As a Sign of Vitality

Have you ever experienced writer’s block? Or maybe for you it’s painter’s block, musician’s block, designer’s block. Maybe it’s coder’s block or therapist’s block. Maybe you just experience the feeling of being blocked from your fullest expression. However we feel it – and I believe we all feel it in one way or another – I want to honor that part of ourselves. In fact, I want to celebrate it.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about this part of me, the artist within me, the one who flows when she can express and gets stuck when there’s a block. The struggle can feel particularly hard when it isn’t an obvious form of art that I can succinctly name like music, writing, painting, designing, and yet I recall that artistic expression is universal and I can feel the block. I remind myself that the act of being me is the greatest piece of art I could ever contribute to this world. The artist is the one in all of us that adds to the greater fabric of the world in which we exist. Who cares if we can’t name it?

Let your masterpiece unfold in every moment that you are. Let this be your art, let yourself devote to the fullest expression of you, and know that when you feel the struggling artist’s nature within you, the one longing and yearning to expand beyond the bounds of your skin, know that it’s a sign of beauty and a sign of vitality to experience that hardship. It shows that you’re alive and that life breathes you, animates the individuality within you as a unique contributor to the collective whole. Let yourself be the art you long to express and create in this lifetime. And in doing so, remember that even the battle of the writer’s block you’ll inevitably encounter is included in that work of art.
