Trust Your Past Self, But Always Double Check

How do you set your goals? I don’t mean how do you go after them, I mean how do you determine what to make a goal in the first place? When’s the last time you considered, “why does it matter to me that I strive for this job, this relationship, this creative project, this vacation, this fitness stat?”

What tells you to prioritize certain goals over others? What are you searching for that tells you “ah yes, this is worth pursuing”? My coach calls these signposts. Maybe it’s a feeling in your body of satisfaction you know you’d like to feel again. Maybe it’s a quality of a thought that reminds you of the goodness already surrounding you. Maybe it’s the calm presence of inspiration that motivates you to revisit what brought you there to begin with. If singing brings you one of the above, set a goal to sing more. If quality time with a loved one fosters a sense of ease in your mind, maybe that’s another type of goal worth pursuing. Whatever it may be, get familiar with what shows up in your mind, body and spirit when you accomplish a goal of any kind.

Set your GPS up right so you know you’re at least heading in the right direction even if you forget where you’re going sometimes. There was a version of you that made the intentional decision that this goal was worth pursuing. Learn to trust your past self’s decisions and always check back in. Trust then double check and reroute accordingly.
